Join the Club, Man! - 2008 MINI Cooper Clubman

Clubman4 I have to admit right at the start that I’m a MINI fan. We bought my wife a MINI Cooper back in 2004 and it’s been an automotive love affair ever since. After a year of competing for the driver’s seat, I bought my own MINI Cooper S in 2005. We’re a MINI family and I’ve never had a car I loved as much.

So it’s no surprise that the whole family was jumping for joy when we got to spend a week driving the new MINI Cooper Clubman - the extended wheelbase “micro-wagon” version of BMW’s diminutive hatchback.  With its “funkier than thou” looks and extra legroom in the back, we wanted to see if the Clubman has the same mojo we love about our daily drivers.

Toyota Hydrogen-Powered Vehicle Takes on Alaska

Toyotahighlanderfchv500 Toyota revealed a significant achievement in its ongoing hydrogen-hybrid fuel cell development program at a press conference recently. A 2,300 mile trek in a Toyota Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicle (FCHV) from Fairbanks, Alaska to Vancouver, British Columbia along the Alaska-Canadian (ALCAN) highway confirmed substantial progress in reliability and durability, cold-weather operation and extended range capability of Toyota's hybrid fuel cell system.

"When our Torrance-based product planners and engineers heard about Toyota Motor Corporation's (TMC) plan to run a distance of 348 miles from Osaka, Japan to Tokyo on a single tank of hydrogen, they thought it was a great idea…that probably didn't go far enough in showing how far this new system had advanced," said Bob Carter, Toyota Division group vice president and general manager.

Seoul Ride: Kia Spectra5 SX Reviewed

Spectra5_action_01 It’s been a long time since I liked an economy hatch as well as the Kia Spectra5 SX. Like most people who have been around since the Korean automakers came the U.S., I haven’t gotten over the expectation that the cars will be cheaply made and underpowered - until now.

I had few preconceived notions about the Kia Spectra5, but I expected it to be about like the Kia Rio5 SX I had last fall - a decent entry-level car that you might buy for your kid to take to college.  In short, not a car that I’d ever consider for myself.  But after a week in the Spectra, I would class it with the Mazda3 or any other Japanese or domestic hatchback in the sub-20K price range. The Kia Spectra is definitely worth your consideration if you’re shopping that segment.

Round Two to Raikkonen

_44509944_kimiwin300_2On the anniversary of his first career win five years ago at the same track, Kimi Raikkonen led the Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro team to a dominating victory over the rest of the field for the Malaysian GP.  After qualifying 2nd to his team mate Felipe Massa and having a drag race down to the first turn, the team mates were able to get away from the start cleanly and put the disaster of the Australian GP behind them.

In the first pit stop period both of the Ferrari’s were able to slowly create a gap to the rest of the field, arguably due to the McLaren team mates penalty during qualifying putting them back at 8th and 9th in the field. During the first pit stop exchange Raikkonen proved his Championship driving abilities and put down a blistering fast lap that allowed him to leap frog Massa and take the lead away. Later in the race Massa spun out into the gravel trap and gave 2nd away to Robert Kubica of the BMW-Sauber team.

During the post race interviews Raikkonen commented on the start of the race, “I got alongside Felipe after I got a bit better start but I thought we don't want to risk between the team-mates in the first corner, and I decided to stay behind and try my move on the first stop and it worked out perfectly. We were pretty similar speed-wise, but once he went in my car went better and I was able to go much quicker on my in-lap and pass him. After that the car was handling perfectly and I was able to go away.”

After this result, Raikkonen has taken 2nd place in the Championship to who will likely be his main competition outside of the team, Lewis Hamilton for the Vodafone McLaren-Mercedes team.  Hamilton suffered from an unfortunate pit stop issue with his right front wheel that ended up costing him twenty seconds and an eventual 5th place finish.

Scion Hako - A Face Only A Mother Could Love

Tyt2008031880100_pv Scion unveiled its Hako Coupe Concept vehicle at a press conference today at the New York International Auto Show. Honestly, our first impression is that these guys have seen way too many '32 Ford sedan hot rods. But it's of a piece with the Ford Flex, so this must be the going thing at the New York Auto Show this year.

Scion's Hako Coupe was developed by Tokyo Design Division, which studied global, youth-inspired trends. Japanese and American youth cultures often influence each other and are interpreted with a unique twist. The Hako Coupe Concept was inspired by the iconic xB and the emergence of American vintage style among young Tokyo trendsetters.

Ford Flex Generates Buzz

Frd2007040438371_pv Ford says: "Now it's safe to add daring and intriguing to your list of adjectives describing Ford vehicles - the new Flex is here." But I'm thinking I'd also use "Boxy" and "Strange" as well - yet Ford seems to welcome strong opinions about their new full-size crossover.

"Flex is a vehicle that dares to be different. Its contemporary design provokes strong opinions. Its new technologies are intelligent and engaging. All in all, Ford Flex is like no other vehicle on the road today, and that may mean it's not for everyone," Ford says.

OK, I can live with that, and and I admire their willingness to do something a little off-base and see if people groove on it.

Spicy Kim Chi: Hyundai's 2010 Genesis Coupe

Hyundai_genesisfront_silver Looks like Hyundai is getting serious. First, it buys redonkulously expensive airtime during this year’s Superbowl to broadcast a less-than memorable ad (hint: it featured a car driving. On a road.) Then, at the 2008 New York Auto Show, Hyundai goes and drops a good looking, rear-wheel drive, 300hp coupe on us.

2009 Solstice Coupe Revealed

X09pn_st003 To no one's surprise (thanks to a leak on the interweb several days ago), at the 2008 New York Auto Show GM revealed its new 2009 Solstice Coupe. Good looking, most certainly. Another disappointment once you get behind the wheel? If past history is any indication, I'd say most likely. 2009 G8 GXP: 400hp, yes please!

X09pn_g8002 In general, I'm not a huge fan of American cars. It's not that they're going to spontaneously combust, lose all their wheels on the freeway or lock the radio on a selection of Miley Cyrus' greatest hit [sic]. No, they offend me at a completely different level: they disappoint.

Sure, in press packs and on the stage of the big shows these cars look great, but once the bubble wrap has been removed, the show lights are long dimmed and you can see the final build in production steel on a showroom floor, they almost universally deflate my soul.

Will the new G8 GXP fare any different? With 402 ft-lbs of torque from a small-block 6.2-liter V8, I would most likely be too busy roasting the tires off to notice.

Hamilton takes Aussie F1

632793_1132352_400_277_hochzwei_238 Vodafone McLaren Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton won the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, the first race of the 2008 Formula 1 World Championship. After turbulent 58 laps (307.574 kms) with three Safety Car periods, Lewis won with 5.4sec ahead of Nick Heidfeld (BMW Sauber) and Nico Rosberg (Williams Toyota).

“I feel fantastic – what a dream start to the season and my championship challenge. I am sorry not to have Heikki with me on the podium as a one-two would have been a great reward to the team.  It was a super race which I controlled from the beginning. I was able to drive at a steady pace without feeling any pressure which is always the ideal situation when you are leading. The three Safety Car periods meant that there was never time to relax and the whole situation was a bit like Canada last year when I claimed my first victory. We constantly had to change our strategy and the strategists were on the ball throughout which was super. The car is fantastic to drive and the team has done a superb job. I have prepared much better this year than last and it’s important that myself and the team continue to push hard in the months to come,” Hamilton said.

Dunlop Introduces New Autocross Tire

163676 Fresh off the starting line, Dunlop's Direzza Sport Z1 ultra-performance tire already has a star next to its name in 2008.

A star has always implied something special, and on the new Direzza Sport Z1 "Star Spec" summer tire, the star designation carries prestigious cachet. For example, "Star Spec" helps provide faster lap times from the start and "consistent grip on ensuing laps" in sanctioned events, according to Matt Neidert, performance tire brand manager for Dunlop in North America.

The new tire features the "Star Spec" tread compound, which helps a performance car's initial dry grip during sanctioned amateur driving events, such as autocross and high-performance track-events hosted by regional car clubs.

The new Direzza Sport Z1 "Star Spec" is available now, qualifying it for use in Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) national events. According to section 13.3 of the 2008 SCCA SOLO rules, tires must be readily available by April 30 to qualify.

The "Star Spec" predecessor won SCCA's hotly contested Street Touring Ultra class at the San Diego National Tour on Sunday. Drivers Thomas Kenna and Richard Jung set the fastest overall times for street tires with a first and fourth place. The Southern California duo raced on full treads, while competitors used shaved tires.

USA Today Discovers Amateur Racing

48_sandiegotour_07 National newspaper USA today has a great story about amateur racers in Mazdas, and chose to feature MazdaSport and Forever MX-5 Autocross columnist Jason Isley, saying:  "Like any other working stiff, Jason Isley commutes to the office in his sporty coupe during the week.

But come Friday, he wrestles the baby carrier out of the back seat of the Mazda RX-8, wrenches on a set of extra-grippy tires and slaps some magnetic racing numbers on the sides. Plop on a helmet, and the transformation is complete: family man to top-performing race car driver."

Recession Fears Take Toll on Auto Buying

Dg008_010ca__mid With more than 250 million automobiles, Americans can be said to be among the most "car-oriented" people in the world; home to nearly one out of every three passenger vehicles, the United States has long been known as the single most important auto market in the world.

But that may be changing now, as the economy hits the skids and record numbers of American consumers are foregoing automobile purchases for the foreseeable future.

In fact, according to a March poll conducted by TechnoMetrica's AutoView (the company's automotive research division), demand for new automobiles among American consumers hit a new 14-month low, forcing their Auto Purchase Outlook Index down an unheard of 23 points, or 26%, to reach 65.6 (vs. 88.8 in February).

Brother, can you spare a ride?

Ryan_douthit_2 I'm a magazine publisher, automotive journalist, 36-years old and here I am, attempting to bum a ride off my father-in-law. You’d think someone that spends so much time around cars would be a bit more careful about keeping at least one ticking.

Naturally, he inquired about my daily driver first. I had to confess I yanked the ECU to get it reset, in preparation for a story. The company doing the work accidentally sent it back to me via ground-mail (even though I specified next day priority) -- so it’s “in the system.”

He didn’t seem to think that ripping my ECU out was a good idea, especially for a car I just bought last year. “How about that ‘Zero’ project, the silver Subaru you raced at Portland?” He pressed. I had to admit, that car’s motor --and most of the interior-- is currently sitting outside the car in a garage down in Portland.

“The Miata?”

“Motor torn apart in preparation for a new turbo kit,” I replied dryly.

“How about that really old rust-bucket, from the 70s, that little green Subaru?”

It was obvious I was beginning to appear less-and-less like a responsible family man, and more like a ruffian looking to take out as many cars as possible, just for the fun of it.  As though some form of transportation had wronged me in a previous life and i was looking to get back at each and every four-wheeled-contraption that crossed my path.

“Oh, that?” I hesitated. “I blew the head-gasket last summer. Head needs to come off.”

After a long pause, he probed further. “You didn’t take Melissa’s car apart, too. Did you?”

No. That was true, my wife’s Mazda3 is still road-worthy. That was practically a vow she had me include in our wedding, “thou shalt not approach this woman's vehicle with intent to ‘improve’ it in any way, less thou shalt face much pain and suffering. If you agree, say ‘I do.’” More or less, I forget the exact words.

Here’s a tip for the would-be tuners out there. First, don’t disassemble the last working vehicle you own. It makes getting around a bit of a challenge from day-to-day. And, second, don’t ask your father-in-law to lend you his car when you do. It’s more embarrassment than it’s worth.

It's a lot harder than it looks

SwrtfitnessSubiesport Magazine has an interview with the personal trainer for Subaru World Rally Team drivers Chris Atkinson and Petter Solberg. They make it look so easy, but really, their bodies are getting a beating out there:

The sport of rallying, especially at the competitive sharp end of the World Championship, is incredibly tough and demanding of both cars and drivers. Teams of engineers channel huge focus and resource into the development of the vehicle side of the equation, but what of the human element?

It’s well known in motorsport that, while engineers are working to find tenths of a second, a driver who tires halfway through a stage suffers reduced focus and slower reactions, leading to the potential loss of seconds, not just tenths.

Champ Car Drivers Oriol Servia, Will Power Land IRL Rides

Kv35003122008 KV Racing Technology co-owners Kevin Kalkhoven and Jimmy Vasser have announced that the team will campaign two cars during the 2008 IndyCar Series season.

"In conjunction with our commitment to the IndyCar Series, we have re-branded the team as KV Racing Technology and agreed to a sponsorship arrangement with Aussie Vineyards -- Team Australia. This will allow Will Power to join teammate Oriol Servia in what I believe will be the most competitive and exciting open-wheel racing series. We want to welcome both Aussie Vineyards -- Team Australia and Will Power to our team and we look forward to a very successful season in 2008 and for many years to come."

KV Racing Technology is entering its sixth year of competition and its first in the IndyCar Series. Servia, who came to an agreement with the team earlier this year, will be behind the wheel of the KV Racing Technology No. 32 Honda/Dallara//Firestone entry. Power will drive the No. 8 Aussie Vineyards -- Team Australia car.

"I am very excited that KV Racing Technology will be competing in what I think will become the most challenging open-wheel series," Vasser said. "Speaking from past experience, this series will be one of the most difficult to win because it requires a driver and a team to race on a variety of different tracks. To win the championship you have to be competitive in all disciplines of open-wheel racing."

Blast Idles Porsche 911 Production

Normal Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, restarted production of the 911 series again last Monday,  March 3, at the main factory in Zuffenhausen. Production was stopped the previous Monday following a "deflagration" (a 20 Euro word for "explosion") that occurred in the paint shop.

Porsche states that a PVC fusion oven was badly damaged. The material damage, amounting to several hundred thousand Euros, is largely covered by insurance. Which is good, because, y'know Porsche might not have the money in the bank to buy a new paint booth.

Rental Cars Get Some Style

X07ch_cr007 In all the world, there's generally nothing more stultifying to the soul of a car guy than a rental. How many underpowered automatic vinyl-seated monstrosities have we all had to endure? Rental agencies are the dumping ground for the unloved and unlovable ugly babies of the automotive world.

But international travelers can now sign up for a luxurious treat with Auto Europe's new prestige car hire service. Visit http://www.auto-europe.co.uk and select 'Luxury London Cars' from the Specials menu to discover a red carpet roll call of cars made by BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar, Lotus, Porsche, Bentley and Aston Martin.

The new service is designed for those with money to spare while traveling on business or pleasure. Every car is guaranteed to be less than 2 years old and most are loaded up with extras like satellite navigation, tinted windows, DVD players, TVs and Bluetooth phone kits. "You may even get a fridge to keep your refreshments chilled!" exclaims Auto Europe's announcement. This is key, because if you've ever been to Britain, you know that they view a frosty drink as an outrageous self-indulgence suitable only for Saudi princes. Even the Royal Family drinks their Red Bull warm over there.

Closer to home, Avis Rent A Car System today announced the addition of the storied Chevrolet Corvette convertible to its U.S. fleet. The Vette is the newest member of the Avis 'Cool Car' Collection, a series of popular high-end vehicles that can be specifically reserved by make and model. AMG/Mercedes to Supply F1 Medical Cars

631664_1129876_400_267_08c171_002 With the new Official F1™ Safety Car and the new Official F1™ Medical Car, Mercedes-AMG, the performance brand of Mercedes-Benz, is launching into the 2008 Formula 1 season.

The Safety Car, based on the SL 63 AMG, and the Medical Car, derived from the C 63 AMG Estate, have the task of ensuring maximum safety at all 18 Formula 1 races. The two specially prepared AMG high-performance automobiles will be on duty for the first time when the Grand Prix season kicks off in Melbourne, Australia from March 14 to 16.

The Official F1™ Safety Car is immediately on hand whenever the safety of a race is threatened by accidents, adverse weather conditions or other hazardous situations. After receiving his instructions from the race management, Bernd Mayländer, the driver of the Safety Car, must go to the head of the Formula 1 field and safely guide the world's fastest racing drivers around the circuit. Fast lap times are a must for the Safety Car, because otherwise the sensitive Formula 1 engines would overheat – and their tyres and brakes would cool down excessively.

Walker Racing Pulls Out of IRL

Atlantic Reluctantly, Walker Racing has been forced to withdraw its attempt to join the IndyCar Series for 2008.  The racing partnership of "Team Australia" and the association with Australian businessman Craig Gore, drivers Will Power and Simon Pagenaud, has also come to an end.

Notwithstanding a commitment for 2008, it came down to the lack of funding. A lengthy search for new sponsorship partners drew a blank, so Walker Racing had to close the program officially on Friday.

“It's a great pity that the team has had to abandon our IndyCar program.  So much work by so many has gone into the Team Australia program over the last three and a half years, but now it will remain unfinished business for us.  I wish my co-partner well with his new venture and so to Will and Simon and all the employees, associates and fans who have given me the opportunity. Many thanks,” said Walker Racing Owner, Derrick Walker.

First Drive, The New 2009 Subaru Forester

2009foresterxt013 People love their Foresters. This is what the folks at Subaru kept reminding us throughout the presentation leading to our first drive of the all-new Crossover Utility Vehicle. Despite this love, there were a few things that owners wanted, like more room fore and aft and a bigger loading area. But if you are reading this, you want the straight dope, and you will want to know how the new range-topping XT 5-speed drives. I can’t tell you anything about this car because it does not exist. That’s right, the turbocharged, 2.5-liter EJ255-powered shoebox is only available with an automatic.

Now there will be some who will wail and moan that the 5-speed turbo is another special car that Subaru has killed all in the name of being more bean-counter friendly, and rightly so. Subaru never sold many 5-speed turbos, at times it was never more than 10 units a month nationally.

Indy Racing League Integrating Champ Car Teams

Sebringtestcvr03062008 The line forms to the right in the Indy Racing League administration trailer at Sebring International Raceway, the home-away-from home office for the sanctioning body's operations personnel during four days of road course testing.

Brian Barnhart, president of the competition and operations divisions, greets each visitor -- armed with a grocery list of questions and/or suggestions -- with a hearty handshake and quip as they settle onto the leather sofa to chat. It's been a hectic week since Indy Racing League CEO Tony George and Champ Car World Series co-owner Kevin Kalkoven confirmed that the open-wheel racing series would unify for the 2008 season under the IndyCar Series banner. But welcome, according to Barnhart.

"It has been an incredible challenge with the timing (the season kicks off March 29 on the Homestead-Miami Speedway oval), but it's definitely a good challenge to find ourselves in," Barnhart said. "I couldn't be more proud of our staff jumping on board and doing what is necessary to make it happen combined with the cooperation of the existing IndyCar Series teams top to bottom and our partners at Honda, Dallara and Firestone.
