$110/bbl Oil Making the Market for Alternative Fuels

Mar2b At DrivingSports, we think that as long as a car is fast and fun to drive, we don't really care if it runs on gasoline, diesel, alcohol, nitromethane, or sunshine and daisies. With oil pushing $110 a barrel and a gallon of gas retailing at about $3.30, Americans are now spending more than 5% of their annual incomes (or about $135 per month) on filling up their tanks. That's up from 3% in 2004 and 4% in 2005.

Clearly, something is going to have to change if we want to continue to enjoy our cars - and we have no plans to buy a bus pass anytime soon. For years the case for more fuel efficient vehicles was held back by the supposed cost to manufacturers while the case for alternative fueled vehicles held little appeal to a market happy with gasoline. But as a recent report shows, that's all changing right now. In fact, according to a new study published this week by TechnoMetrica Market Intelligence, three quarters (74%) of American consumers are ready for alternative fuel vehicles.

Chick Cars and Guy Cars - It's True!

Concours InsureMe, an insurance referral service, recently announced results of research to determine if the stereotypes relating to automobiles hold up to empirical rigor. The findings were surprising.

"In a word, yes," said Peter Deusterman, InsureMe's in-house statistician. "They hold up much better than I would've predicted."

InsureMe is a web-based service that helps people obtain auto insurance. In the process it collects consumer information, including car ownership data. While all information is anonymous, it is occasionally studied to note certain trends.

"If you tell me you drive a car that's made in Italy, I can tell you how many X chromosomes you have," said Deusterman with a smile. "One." Deusterman asserted he can tell you with reasonable, statistical confidence. According to the data, 86 percent of people seeking insurance quotes for Ferraris, Maseratis and Lamborghinis in the past 13 months were men.

(Ed. Note: Yeah, OK, I have 4 Alfa Romeos, I plead guilty to being a guy!)

Toyota Hydrogen-Powered Vehicle Takes on Alaska

Toyotahighlanderfchv500 Toyota revealed a significant achievement in its ongoing hydrogen-hybrid fuel cell development program at a press conference recently. A 2,300 mile trek in a Toyota Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicle (FCHV) from Fairbanks, Alaska to Vancouver, British Columbia along the Alaska-Canadian (ALCAN) highway confirmed substantial progress in reliability and durability, cold-weather operation and extended range capability of Toyota's hybrid fuel cell system.

"When our Torrance-based product planners and engineers heard about Toyota Motor Corporation's (TMC) plan to run a distance of 348 miles from Osaka, Japan to Tokyo on a single tank of hydrogen, they thought it was a great idea…that probably didn't go far enough in showing how far this new system had advanced," said Bob Carter, Toyota Division group vice president and general manager.

Ford Flex Generates Buzz

Frd2007040438371_pv Ford says: "Now it's safe to add daring and intriguing to your list of adjectives describing Ford vehicles - the new Flex is here." But I'm thinking I'd also use "Boxy" and "Strange" as well - yet Ford seems to welcome strong opinions about their new full-size crossover.

"Flex is a vehicle that dares to be different. Its contemporary design provokes strong opinions. Its new technologies are intelligent and engaging. All in all, Ford Flex is like no other vehicle on the road today, and that may mean it's not for everyone," Ford says.

OK, I can live with that, and and I admire their willingness to do something a little off-base and see if people groove on it.

Recession Fears Take Toll on Auto Buying

Dg008_010ca__mid With more than 250 million automobiles, Americans can be said to be among the most "car-oriented" people in the world; home to nearly one out of every three passenger vehicles, the United States has long been known as the single most important auto market in the world.

But that may be changing now, as the economy hits the skids and record numbers of American consumers are foregoing automobile purchases for the foreseeable future.

In fact, according to a March poll conducted by TechnoMetrica's AutoView (the company's automotive research division), demand for new automobiles among American consumers hit a new 14-month low, forcing their Auto Purchase Outlook Index down an unheard of 23 points, or 26%, to reach 65.6 (vs. 88.8 in February).

Rental Cars Get Some Style

X07ch_cr007 In all the world, there's generally nothing more stultifying to the soul of a car guy than a rental. How many underpowered automatic vinyl-seated monstrosities have we all had to endure? Rental agencies are the dumping ground for the unloved and unlovable ugly babies of the automotive world.

But international travelers can now sign up for a luxurious treat with Auto Europe's new prestige car hire service. Visit http://www.auto-europe.co.uk and select 'Luxury London Cars' from the Specials menu to discover a red carpet roll call of cars made by BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar, Lotus, Porsche, Bentley and Aston Martin.

The new service is designed for those with money to spare while traveling on business or pleasure. Every car is guaranteed to be less than 2 years old and most are loaded up with extras like satellite navigation, tinted windows, DVD players, TVs and Bluetooth phone kits. "You may even get a fridge to keep your refreshments chilled!" exclaims Auto Europe's announcement. This is key, because if you've ever been to Britain, you know that they view a frosty drink as an outrageous self-indulgence suitable only for Saudi princes. Even the Royal Family drinks their Red Bull warm over there.

Closer to home, Avis Rent A Car System today announced the addition of the storied Chevrolet Corvette convertible to its U.S. fleet. The Vette is the newest member of the Avis 'Cool Car' Collection, a series of popular high-end vehicles that can be specifically reserved by make and model. The Chevrolet Corvette convertible is now available with guaranteed reservations at select Avis locations in Arizona, California, Florida and Las Vegas.

New Hybrid Technology on Display in Geneva

Prnjdisplayimageservlet By now, you've noticed that I like to jump on technological issues as they come floating down the news stream. The reason is simple: This stuff is what we'll all be driving in 10 years, and I want driving to stay fun.

Really, I don't have any commitment to gasoline, as long as there's some around to power my classic cars. The next new car I buy could run on fresh air, sunshine, and daisies for all I care, so long as it's fast and handles well.

This year's Geneva Auto Show seems to be where every company in the world is announcing advances in a couple of key areas: diesel performance and lithium-ion battery technology. Sometimes together in one package. The diesel-electric hybrid idea dates back to the early 20th century, and in fact, most railroad locomotives still use a diesel-electric combination of powerplants. It's likely that your next  sports car will use a turbo-diesel in combination with an electric motor to get you off the line fast and  maintain a healthy top speed. Which is fine with me - my big-ass rattle-can pickup truck turns mid-15s on the strip.

So we keep a finger on the pulse of the new technology around DrivingSports HQ. Here's the latest, a new hydrogen fuel cell car from the Italians:

Pininfarina unveiled its new concept car, the Sintesi, featuring Nuvera's Quadrivium(TM) drive, at the Geneva Motor Show today in Geneva, Switzerland.

Honda Tops Consumer Reports Best List

14960_preview Overall, the best cars sold in the U.S. are still made by Honda, according to the Automaker Report Cards published in Consumer Reports' Annual Auto Issue on sale March 4. Honda also led the pack last year, the first time the country's largest expert, independent, non-profit consumer product testing organization issued such information.

With an overall score of 78 out of 100 points, Honda was followed closely by Toyota (75) and Subaru (72). BMW, Mazda, Nissan, and Volkswagen tied at 71, after rounding. Only Honda and Subaru have earned the distinction of having all of the models tested make Consumer Reports' Recommended list. Honda is also the only automaker whose entire model lineup is currently recommended. Full details and rankings are available in the article "Who makes the best cars?" in the magazine and for online subscribers at www.ConsumerReports.org.

Honda earned the top score because it builds cars that are well-rounded, have excellent reliability and perform very well. But not all of Honda's models lead their class. The new CR-V SUV can't quite match the top-ranked Toyota RAV4. The Accord was edged out by the Nissan Altima, and the Honda Odyssey minivan scored slightly lower than the Toyota Sienna.

Mercedes Announces GLK Hybrid SUV

630194_1126455_400_305_08c173_015 Mercedes-Benz will announce the diesel-electric-powered Vision GLK BLUETEC HYBRID to their SUV line-up at the Geneva Auto Show next week. This proof-of-concept study illustrates the possibilities of the company's "TrueBlueSolutions" strategy in the compact SUV segment.

The Vision GLK BLUETEC HYBRID achieved this goal by combining the new BLUETEC four-cylinder diesel engine generation with a hybrid module. This combination generates an overall output of 165 kW/224 hp, and a torque of 560 Nm. Superior performance can be taken as read in view of these figures. And yet the Vision GLK BLUETEC HYBRID returns a fuel consumption of only 5.9 l per 100 km. (39.87 MPG)

With fuel prices expected to hit $4/Gallon by Spring in the United States and the promotion of clean diesel engines through racing series such as the VW TDI Cup, this looks like a timely announcement from the venerable German automaker.

Lexus Finally Unveils an Interesting Car!

Tyt2008010946298_pv Stop the presses! Someone please pinch me! Lexus has finally unveiled a concept for a car that doesn't make me want to kill myself from sheer boredom!  Please, I beg you, someone assure me that they'll actually build it and get away from their usual rolling piles of self-satisfied smugness!

The LF-A Roadster is based on the sturdy yet lightweight carbon-fiber and aluminum   body used for the LF-A coupe, which helps maintain the structure's strength   and rigidity even without a top.

Like its coupe counterpart, the LF-A Roadster is powered by a high-revving   V10 engine that approaches 5.0 liters in displacement. The V10, capable of more   than 500 horsepower and test-track speeds greater than 200 mph, is mounted in   front of the passenger compartment but behind the front-axle centerline in what   the LF-A's engineers refer to as a "front-mid" configuration.

The engine is connected via a torque tube and propeller shaft to a transaxle   that is controlled by paddle shifters. The torque tube is a structural member   that adds rigidity to the drivetrain and chassis while also reducing vibration.

Isuzu to Leave U.S. Market - Will Anyone Notice?

Company_faqs Isuzu Motors America, Inc. announced that effective January 31, 2009, it would discontinue distributing new Isuzu passenger vehicles in North America. The discontinuation of passenger vehicles results from the prospective cessation of production by General Motors Corporation of the Ascender Sport Utility Vehicle, and the i-290 and i-370 pickup trucks.

It's a long fall from the days when "Joe Isuzu" was making funny commercials and the funky Isuzu Trooper was in the vanguard of Japanese Mini-SUVs.  The Isuzu iMark predated Apple Computer's successful prefixing gimmick by decades, but who remembers that?

Although Isuzu will cease supplying passenger vehicles in North America, "we are fully committed to continue providing service support to our customer base and Dealers for years to come" said Terry Maloney, President/COO. Isuzu will continue to honor all product warranties and roadside assistance programs and will maintain its owner-relations call center. In addition, to assure long-term service to its customers, Isuzu will be offering all current, U.S. Isuzu vehicle dealers the opportunity to continue on as service dealerships for Isuzu. "Let me make it crystal clear, Isuzu will discontinue the sales of vehicles only. Our parts and service operation will remain fully functional. We expect the vast majority of our dealers will continue to service our loyal Isuzu customers."

Auto Industry Flashes the Green at Winter Auto Shows

This year, the trend is mostly in the other direction, and you’ll be able to see the difference at this winter's Auto Shows.

Back in November, I went to the Los Angeles Auto Show to get an early look at the 2009 prototypes and concept cars. Every manufacturer at the L.A. Auto Show wanted to talk about green. Not just the color of money, but about alternative fuels, hybrid engines, and clean transportation.

Getting ready for the 2008 import car show season

Projectone2007mediumJust recently, my car show team and I had a meeting to discuss our first car show of the year.  Being in the car show scene since 2002, I've got a few years under my belt and I've watched the scene evolve as much as my bugeye WRX has over the years.  During the off season, it's easy for me to lose enthusiasm for what my team and I do every year, but this time I've paid witness to a lot of changes that I believe are bad for the scene, even if it really isn't particularly anyone's fault.

The most apparent thing I've noticed is that a lot of the car show enthusiasts that I've gotten to know over the years are retiring from the scene.  Many of them have their show cars for sale and others have already sold their cars off and moved on with their lives.  The problem is, there really hasn't really been much of a crowd to fill these shoes.  This can partly be attributed to an overall movement of the aftermarket industry toward being much more performance-oriented rather than aesthetic-oriented, but I truly don't see that as being a problem.

If anything, I actually welcome this very much, since I'd rather see a really powerful, complete car that is driven like it should be at a car show, rather than a car that only sees the light of day a few times a year, with some of that daylight blinding you from its fully-chromed undercarriage.  However, all too often lately I've been hearing comments such as "I saw better cars in the parking lot than in the actual show" and that truly disheartens me.  If you have a show-worthy car, why not show it and be proud of the money you've put into the aftermarket parts.  Sure enough, the argument can be made that one just wants to keep to themselves and what-not, but if your car in the parking lot looks better than what's in the show, then I think it's almost snobbish not to share your wonderful creation with everyone else.

Another problem that I've seen is all the drama that comes about because of how car shows are administered.  Everyone wants fame by winning trophies; after all, there was a time when winning 1st Place Subaru was my main goal when I went to shows.  However, thanks to inconsistent judging practices, politics related to car show teams or event sponsors, and the simple fact that the trophy you win comes nowhere near the amount you invest into your car, I think that many people are losing sight of what it means to be a car enthusiast, and more specifically a car show enthusiast.  I think that I've reached a point now where I could truly care less about winning another trophy personally.  All I'd like to do is show off my car, help support my team, and enjoy myself without all the drama.

Okay, so I've cited a few problems, so how do I propose we all fix it?  I think a big step in the right direction would be to have more show and shine events, where there aren't any trophies or competition and the money used to participate goes to a charity of some sort.  That way, the show goes back to just being for enthusiasts and showing everyone what you've done with your car, your money, and your heart and soul.  Hot rod enthusiasts are able to do this easily on an almost weekly basis during the show season, so why can't those of us with imports do the same?  Since I don't think it's all the difficult, I'm hoping to organize at least one of these charity show and shines with my team this year.  If it's anything like what we had done in the past (raised about $3000 for Seattle's Children's Hospital) then I think it'll be a huge success.

New Aftermarket Contributor to the DS Blog

What?  This isn't Ryan or Jeff?  Who might this be?!  Well, allow me to introduce myself.  For those of you who don't know me already, my name is Armin H. Ausejo, Vice President of Marketing for World One Performance by day, Style Editor and Photographer Extraordinaire for Subiesport Magazine by...well, nights and weekends I suppose.  In any case, Ryan asked me to join on here at Driving Sports as a regular blog contributor, so here I am!

I'll be publishing 3 blogs per week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday), mostly devoted to the aftermarket industry that we car enthusiasts know and love.  Since I see the aftermarket industry as a customer, a vendor, and as a journalist, I hope that my unique view of things will be interesting for regular Driving Sports readers.  Here's a few things you can look forward to in the coming days and weeks:

  • The Time Attack Experience
  • The Professional Drifting Experience
  • The Car Show Experience
  • New aftermarket products for the 08 STI, Evo X, and GT-R (among others)
  • Forum Aftermarket Mythbusting
  • The Proper Way to Get Sponsored
  • Product Price Negotiating

That just about does it for this introductory blog.  You'll be hearing from me very soon ;)
