We figure it's about the only reason to tune in to Idol any more: Ford debuted the new Focus coupe for the 2009 model year Wednesday on "American Idol." This marks the first time Ford has ever revealed a new product on prime time television. "Focus is the little car that delivers in a big way for customers, with 35 mpg fuel economy, cool features including SYNC, a fun drive, strong quality and the right price," said John Felice, Ford Division group marketing manager. "We thought the 'American Idol' debut would be a new way for customers to see the upgrades for themselves."

Last week we drove the ultra-luxurious Jaguar XJ Super V8 sedan and enjoyed it. The XJ is a great car but at a sticker price of about $95,000 it’s more than a bit out of reach for most people. But Jaguar followed up that superlative ride with their brand new and ultra-hot XF Coupe. With a sticker price of $62,200, it’s still what the industry calls an “aspirational vehicle,” but it’s still $30-large cheaper than the sedan, and you get all the best stuff carried over from the XJ.
The XF features the same supercharged 4.2-liter V8 engine with 400
horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, mated with the same excellent
6-speed automatic transmission. The tranny features paddle shifters on
the steering wheel and a “Sport” mode that shifts for speed better than
most people can manage. The car is rear wheel drive, which is great for
sporty driving, and that’s what you can expect from the XF.

There really is something special about a Jaguar. The XJ (originally named for eXperimental Jaguar) has been produced for 40 years with substantially the same body lines, and it remains a popular choice in the luxury market. More than half the cars Jaguar has ever built - over 800,000 units - have been XJ models. The 2008 XJ is the seventh generation of the car according to Jaguar’s method of calculation, and the 2008 XJ Super V8 is without a doubt the most powerful and luxurious offering in XJ history.
This year, you can get your XJ with a normally aspirated 310 horsepower 4.2-liter V8 engine, or the Super V8, pulling over 400 horsepower and 408 pound-feet of torque from a supercharged 4.2-liter V8. That’s some serious grunt for a supposedly sedate British luxury car!

The Western Automotive Journalists organization gathered this week in beautiful Monterey, Calif. to test drive the 2008 sports and luxury car field from virtually every automaker doing business in North America. Journalists from up and down the west coast arrived to test the full fleet of 2008 cars on the winding mountain roads of Carmel Valley and at speed on the track at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
Yes, that's the new Nissan GT-R parked next to the NISMO Edition 350Z in the photo to the right. Yes, they're as good as you think they are.
Events such as this serve a number of purposes, including a rare chance for side-by-side tests of comparable cars from different automakers, and also to allow a relaxed atmosphere to talk shop with the manufacturer representatives. But I wouldn't lie to you and tell you it was anything like working - this event is big-time fun.

Ford says: "Now it's safe to add daring and intriguing to your list of adjectives describing Ford vehicles - the new Flex is here." But I'm thinking I'd also use "Boxy" and "Strange" as well - yet Ford seems to welcome strong opinions about their new full-size crossover.
"Flex is a vehicle that dares to be different. Its contemporary design provokes strong opinions. Its new technologies are intelligent and engaging. All in all, Ford Flex is like no other vehicle on the road today, and that may mean it's not for everyone," Ford says.
OK, I can live with that, and and I admire their willingness to do something a little off-base and see if people groove on it.

Ford of Europe unveiled their new "Fiesta" this week at the Geneva Auto Show - the little hatch comes in three and five-door versions.
"Sustainable mobility
imposes a huge challenge for society and the automotive industry, and
there is still a long journey ahead of us," said John Fleming, Ford of
Europe president and CEO. "Further out, we're working on a range of affordable new petrol engines
under the Ford EcoBoost name. These use a combination of direct fuel
injection and turbocharging technologies to deliver better performance,
emissions and economy from smaller displacement engines."

The term “Crossover SUV” or “CUV” gets a lot of play these days. It means whatever you want it to mean, and it’s a hot market segment right now. People expect a Crossover to get better fuel mileage, handle better, and generally be less work to drive than a full-on SUV, and in general they’re correct.
The original Crossover idea was that an automaker could build both a car and an SUV on the same unibody chassis, and thereby save money on drivetrain, platform, suspension, brakes, and all that. The idea comes down from the Minivan, which was generally built on a car chassis and used car brakes and other common components.

Every year at the various Auto Shows around America, representatives of the big three U.S. automakers give a short presentation to the local media about their new cars. Two years ago, the talk was all about big - bigger cars and SUVs with bigger engines than the year before. This year, the trend is mostly in the other direction, and you’ll be able to see the difference at this winter's Auto Shows.
Back in November, I went to the Los Angeles Auto Show to get an early look at the 2009 prototypes and concept cars. Every manufacturer at the L.A. Auto Show wanted to talk about green. Not just the color of money, but about alternative fuels, hybrid engines, and clean transportation.

Great cars and hit movies enjoy a pleasantly symbiotic relationship. The cars make the movies fun and exciting and the movies give cars a certain panache - they often make the cars the stars, upstaging the human actors.
From Herbie the Love Bug to “The last of the V-8 Interceptors” in the Mad Max series, a starring role can spawn hundreds of home-built imitations on the streets. But it takes factory support to really make a nice knock-off of a movie car.

Ford is bringing back the Taurus nameplate for the 2008 model year, replacing the Ford Five Hundred. The Taurus has been one of Ford’s biggest selling models of the last several decades, and they’re clearly banking on the familiar name to boost sales in the mid-large sedan segment.
