SCCA Drivers Head for Road America

The culmination of the SCCA racing season is the National Championship Runoffs, and this year for the first time these 25 championship races will be held at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.  Across America, about 650 SCCA drivers are loading their trailers and making the journey.

Urso_Porter_5-01Driving Sports will be riding along with one of them - Eddie Nakato races a 2008 Honda Civic SI in an SCCA class called Showroom Stock B. Showroom stock is easy to understand - you take a brand new car, put a roll cage and a racing seat into it, and then you go race. You're allowed to change tires and brake pads, and that's about it.

What you get from a Showroom Stock race is wild action - these cars slide through every turn trying to keep their momentum up, and the racing is razor close.

There are 5 Showroom Stock and Touring classes at the Runoffs, but that's far from the whole show. There are also 7 classes of open wheel formula cars, ranging from the go-kart style Formula 500 to the ultimate Formula Atlantic class. There are 4 classes of modified Production sports cars, 4 classes of tube-frame GT cars, 4 classes of purpose-built sports racers, and the most successful class in SCCA history - Spec Miata.

DSC_2278-01Our coverage begins with the drive - we'll be live-blogging our journey from Portland, Oregon to Elkhart Lake along America's I-80. You can join us at Stuckey's and Flying J as we traverse the continent. Then at Road America, we'll interview the top dogs and the back markers who are there for the love of the competition. We'll talk to corner workers from every region in America, who congregate to watch the best racing of the year. We'll take a close-up look at the racing cars, with a guided tour by the crew chiefs. And we'll talk to the racing parts vendors who all make the annual pilgrimage to the biggest amateur racing event in America.

We'll be posting on this channel at Driving Sports, putting videos on YouTube, and of course the signature RoadFlix style video blog. The epicenter of our coverage will be the new DSTV SCCA Racing section, located here.

Come along with us - it's going to be a hell of a trip.
